Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is art therapy and how does it differ from a regular art class?
Art therapy focuses on the creative process as a means of emotional expression and healing, guided by a licensed professional, rather than focusing on technical skill or the final aesthetic product.
Do I need to be 'good' at art to benefit from these sessions?
No artistic experience is necessary to benefit from art therapy.
How long is a typical session and what can I expect?
Sessions will typically last 50-60 minutes. After assessing comfort levels and experience with materials, a session incorporating art therapy will begin with a brief check-in, followed by guided or free-form art-making, and conclude with a discussion about your observations and feelings during the process.
What kind of materials will we be using?
When in person, I provide access to use a variety of media including markers, color pencils, watercolor, clay, collage materials, and pastels. The choice of material often depends on your comfort level and the specific goals of our session. When online, a lot can come out of simply pen and paper.
Is art therapy covered by insurance?
Coverage varies significantly depending on your provider and plan. I recommend contacting your insurance carrier directly to inquire about out-of-network mental health benefits for licensed psychotherapists, in which case I can provide a superbill for you to submit for reimbursement.
